Contact: Larry Norton 1-315-939-8119 Email: FernLaneLLC@gmail.com The cottage is located on 1st lake, at the end of a cove and much quieter than other places. This area has less boat traffic so you will feel good about your teenagers kayaking and fishing on their own. You won't get jet skis going back and forth. Just an 8-minute drive from Old Forge, this private cottage has everything you could need on an Adirondack vacation.
SANDY BEACH: The sandy beach area has gradual walk-in, perfect for kids to play in the water, it’s shallow enough, quite a way’s out so lots of space for the kids to splash about. The sandy beach provides easy lake access for getting kayaks in and out of the lake.
LOONS: We have Loon Family’s living in the cove on 1st Lake. Pack your binoculars so you can be thrilled by loon sightings swimming about, whose sound is so symbolic of the Adirondacks. The loon wail or long howl is used to re-establish contact with a separated mate. Male loons have a unique yodel, a series of repeated alternating high and low notes, that advertise their territory.
FISHING: Fishing must be good as Loons primarily diet is fish. The Fulton Chain of Lakes has Bass, Bullhead, Perch, Pike, Tiger Muskie, Trout and Sunfish. New York State stocks Trout and Tiger Muskellunge in the spring.
DOCK: You can park a power boat all week at the dock; high water mark is nominally three (3) feet water depth at the end of dock. A full-service Marina in town with rental boats, Boat Launch, Marine Store and Non-Ethanol gas. Kayak & Pontoon rentals available in town. Power outlets on dock to recharge your Trolling Motor Batteries.
THE YARD: The lake side has a raised porch and lower slate patio with gas grill are on the sunny side of the property. Sit in Adirondack chairs or the built-in picnic table style bench that make for an enjoyable lunch facing the lake. You can watch the kids swimming or playing in the grassy yard. At night enjoy the outside fire pit, lessening to the loons.
AIR CONDITIONING with CLIMATE CONTROL: The Heat Pump System provides both Air Conditioning & Heat. A Heat pump functions as an Air Conditioner in the summer and a heater in the winter as long as the outside air temperature is above freezing. When the outside temp drops below Zero, the back-up, “Propane Furnace†will provide “Auxiliary Heatâ€. We also added an Ultraviolet (UV) light to improve the air quality and have a humidifier for dry winter air.
HOW TO GAIN ACCESS: The cottage has an "Electronic Key Pad", no need to wait for “Hardware Keysâ€. The cottage is accessed by using your personal code to gain access and will only work during the dates & times stated on the agreement paperwork.
LIVING ROOM: An open floor plan with high cathedral ceiling, nostalgic decor, wood fireplace and knotty pine interior walls. The living room has several southern facing windows that allows the sun light in with views of the lake and swimming area.
KITCHEN: The kitchen table is a family-size farmer's table that will bring everyone together each night and where the kids can enjoy domino tournaments. Expandable dining table with seating up to 10 adults. Extra room at the kitchen counter. We had a beautiful weekend. This is a great vacation home with a spectacular view and everything you need for a memorable time in the Adirondacks!! We truly enjoyed our stayed and chance to Make More Memories with our friends.
We had a great time staying on First Lake. The house is almost at the end of the lake, so there wasn’t lots of boat traffic or noise. The week we were there the houses on either side of us were empty so it felt very secluded. I’d describe the house decor as “70’s ski house”, but it is clean and charming. We spent lots of time sitting on the porch or Adirondack chairs on the lawn watching loons and the sun setting. It’s a short drive into town, where we found everything we needed for the most part. We did take the owners advice and do a lot of grocery shopping in Syracuse before we drove to the house. The town of Old Forge is very nice, but very small. One of our group had to leave early and thought he’d be able to Uber to the Syracuse airport, but nope. No Uber or Lyft drivers in town, we had to drive him to Utica and get an Uber there for the remainder of the drive to Syracuse. Don’t underestimate how remote it is. With that being said, cell and WiFi service were great at the house. There’s lots of great hiking trails in and around Old Forge, and we rented a canoe and kayak for a few days, so we had lots of nice outdoor experiences. We would absolutely stay here again.
We had a 3 family outing over Labor Day weekend. The cottage and location were great. The area of the lake had less boat traffic and we felt good about the teenagers kayaking and fishing on their own. The entrance to the wafer and the fire pit setup were great. Larry provided good, detailed info on the cabin location and nearby attractions. We would definitely book again and come back to Old Forge.
This was our third year at Fern Lane and loved it more! The new addition was the AC which helped so much for the hot, humid nights--nice addition Larry! Thanks for another great week!!
Great spot, beach area is perfect for kids. House is spacious and great for few families to vacation together!
This is a great place for families. At the end of the lake and very quiet and relaxing. We had a leak under the sink and Larry was right on it the same day. Place was clean when we arrived. I couldn’t believe we never had any mosquitoes at night!! Having air was wonderful. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a quiet lakefront Adirondack home. Thanks Larry we all had a great time. My grandkids didn’t want to leave.
The cottage was exactly as pictured and had all the amenities it listed. The cottage was warm and inviting. There were nine of us and we had plenty of room. The directions we received to the cottage were perfect. The owner was great to deal with. It's obvious the property means a lot to him. The new heat/AC unit is a great addition for the cottage. The only room it doesn't cool is the large bedroom, but we were told there will be AC in that room in 2019. It wasn't super hot when we were there, so we were okay. The only thing, for me, that could make this property better would be a washer and dryer. I would definitely recommend this property to others. My son already wanted to rent it again, and we hadn't even finished our vacation. :)
You will feel at home while you stay at this traditional Old Forge Camp. Our group ranged in age from 12 to 82 and everyone loved it. Family meals at the extra large dining table will bring back memories and laughter for years. Pack your binoculars so you can be thrilled by loon sightings! This camp features a new climate system and it was immediately put to the test when the July temperatures reached 92 degrees. The new climate system kept us calm and cool. Camp Fern Lane is an easy drive from the town of Old Forge and you’ll find the perfect spot to hang your camping hammock and fish that take the bait! Our stay exceeded expectations and all ten of us would return in a heartbeat. It was a pleasure to work with the Owner and we were appreciative of the care he bestows upon his family camp.
Beautiful location. Close proximity to the village of Old Forge. On the water with peaceful wooded location. Highly recommend!! Can't wait to return myself!
This is a perfect lake house just as you would dream of in Adirondack. Perfect lake view and private dock. Very convenient location only few minutes away from Old Forge. Definitely worth going.
Clean, comfortable and quiet though lots to do if you want. Beds are so comfortable and kitchen well stocked with dishes, pots/pans and utensils. This was our second year and already planning for 2018!! Owner is so easy to deal with and accessible by email if needed. Thanks for another great vacation!!
We had a wonderful week. The house was very comfortable, and we really enjoyed the nostalgic decor. The lake was just beautiful. The house is situated on a very pretty private part of the lake. It was wonderfully quiet except for the loons! Would not hesitate to stay here again.
The cottage was just as the pictures. Kitchen was stocked with everything you need. Beautiful lake view and Sandy beach was great for my grandchildren. Neighbor was friendly and has 4 very friendly and well behaved dogs. The owner Larry was great and responds quickly to any questions or concerns. House fit all 1O of us comfortably. Would definitely stay here again!
The cottage was very clean, kitchen had all the needed dishes/ cooking utensils along with a dishwasher. All the beds were comfortable and there were fans in every bedroom which we needed for the hot, hot week we had. The swimming area was sandy and also had a great dock. Larry was so easy to deal with and available for any issues. Couldn't have had a nicer time!! Thanks Larry!!
Outstanding week, great family memories and an overall wonderful experience. The house had great supplies and the beds were amazing! We enjoyed cooking and grilling for the family and sitting on the deck and dock. It was the perfect location for all the kids and adults to put the 8 kayaks and 2 paddle boards in the water with ease. They could safely paddle around the cove and up to Dog Island and just enjoy the day on the water. It was a real treat to be able to see the the cove from the top of McCauly Mt. Sightseeing Chairlift Ride. Making plans to come back to our favorite Upstate NY town. Heather W. July 2017
In spite of rain and lots of clouds we had an excellent stay-our second in two years. The place is small and old but has everything you could possibly want in the kitchen. The only missing thing is a dryer which would have been handy during our wet stay. The place is toward the end of a cove and so is much quieter than other places. You don't get jet skis going back and forth in front. Instead we had Mr. and Mrs. Loon and baby whose sound is so (to me) symbolic of Adirondack lakes. There is plenty of lawn for playing games and the water is super. Easy access for little ones on sand and a good dock for jumping in. We were visited many times daily with the coffee klatch duck ladies and then mama duck with her many ducklings. We rented a party boat which has a very easy place for docking and explored the 4 lakes. When it wasn't raining or too cold we had fires at night in the great fire pit surrounded by Adirondack chairs. All in all a great stay which we will do again next year.
Our first stay here was by far the most pleasant of any we've had at other Adirondack locations over the years. The home was clean but warmly decorated and the amenities and easy lake access (yes, sand!) was exactly as described by the owner. Our group spanned many decades, from toddlers to seniors and everyone agreed that this quiet corner of First Lake was perfect for swimming, splashing, paddle boarding, or resting in between. All guests found their rooms quiet and beds comfortable and the truly family-size farmer's table brought everyone together each night. We were also grateful to the owner for checking in on us and providing recommendations for dinner and breakfast. It's a lovely home and we would enjoy staying there again.
Located on quiet section of 1st lake so we could enjoy the loons swimming about and some amazing sunsets and sunrises. The sandy beach area was perfect for our grand kids to play in the water and also getting our kayaks in and out. The water was shallow enough quite a ways out so lots of space for the kids to splash about. The house was comfortable and had plenty of space for our extended family of 9. Kitchen fully stocked with every kind of dish or pan you could need., There was also a nice grill on lower patio which was a wonderful quiet place to escape to on a couple of rainy days we had ! We will definitely stay there again.
We were pleasantly surprised with the cute little town of Old Forge. We are two families with 4 older teens and found plenty for all to enjoy. House met all our needs. Loved the outdoor space with grill and fire pit and plenty of seating. Spent a lot of time on dock, fishing and relaxing.
We were welcomed to a well stocked kitchen that had everything I use at home. The house was clean and very comfortable. Large table for dining and domino tournaments. Beds are super comfy with nice size bedrooms. Two bathrooms each with a shower. WiFi was excellent. TV appeared to be great, we don't watch TV on vacation. Dock was good. Water access great. Four beautiful golden retrievers next door who were very friendly and enjoyed the dog treats I bought them. Neighbors are lovely. Great place to stay and would highly recommend it. And yes, we would go back. And Larry was efficient and wonderful to work with
The set-up of this property was perfect for our two family stay. The pictures are true to what is offered as well. The dock was nice for morning coffee and nights listening to the loon sing. Boating can be done just outside the cottage in the calm cove. We will plan on staying again next year during the same period! The only addition to make this better would be having a small washer and dryer to wash clothes. Our deposit was returned quickly and we had received notice from Larry before we left Old Forge. This is a great place and I would recommend it to anyone looking for time away in OF!!
We have been to the Adirondacks many times as campers, this was our first experience renting a cottage. If you love the Adirondack experience this cottage is for you. Loved the location on 1st lake. We were a family of 7 adults and 3 children. The cottage fit our family comfortable. The sandy beach and dock were great for swimming and fishing. We brought our kayaks and we used them everyday. We rented a pontoon boat for a day and fit nicely at the dock. The house was clean and the kitchen was stocked with everything you would find in your own home. The large kitchen table was a plus and was nice that there was children size chairs. No booster seats needed. The Wi-Fi worked well and the cable TV came in handy when the thunderstorms showed up. There was stacked firewood to use in the fire pit, which it was smore night every night. The cottage was a short drive into Old Forge about 3 miles. Saw deer daily, ducks came for a visit a family of five, and then hearing and watching the loons made the whole ADK vacation memorable.
This was a perfect place for a 3-generation vacation of families from several parts of the US. We all loved the beach area and dock which were perfect for the young grandchildren (and the rest of us) to enjoy fishing, swimming and for all of us to launch our canoes. The house was comfortable and the kitchen very well equipped with everything one might need. The new large dining table held all ten of us easily. We enjoyed making s'mores around the fire ring in the evening and sitting on the dock and deck. The location is very good - a short drive into Old Forge and about 20 minutes away from Inlet. The position on the lake is ideal for swimming and canoeing - it is away from the main channel and the majority of power boats. The enhanced wi-fi made all of the adults more comfortable since work doesn't end even when one is on vacation.
This place was amazing. Everything and more than the pictures showed. It was in immaculate condition, had everything you could possibly need, even things like paper plates, plastic wrap, hand soap, bandaids, pretty much anything you could need. DVD player with many good dvd's, a computer with wifi, fully equipped kitchen even measuring spoons and cups, pitchers, non-stick pans, microwave, and dishwaser. I brought a lot of things I didn't need. The view is spectacular, the water area sandy and great for kids and adults. Plenty of room for our group of 10. Excellent customer service by the owner. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone! The cost was a bit high since we paid for all our kids to come, but I guess it's the going rate for a cottage that would fit 10 people. We spent much of our time right there enjoying the water and the cottage. The town is a short drive away and we did go there several times. Groceries are available, though we brought a lot of our own. A bit expensive compared to where we live. We love Tony Harper's in town, Walt's Diner and Daikers (a bit farther down, 20 min), Keyes Pancake House. Calypso's Cove has a lot of fun things to do, Nutty Putty mini-golf also fun and the chair lift at McCauley Mountain. We love Old Forge and we had a fantastic time. Would love to go back to this cottage in the future.
Enjoyed this house very much. The kitchen was the perfect size for our family and all appliances worked well. The outdoor lake view deck was very peaceful. Really wish there was access to a washer and dryer on the property
We have been renting in Old Forge for many years. This was our first time at this location, since we were bringing up a new family and needed a larger house to share. This house was fantastic for kids. The beach kept them busy swimming and playing in the sand 24/7. Also enjoyed fishing off the dock. Saw and heard Loons every day as well. Very short drive to town, off South Shore Rd. Do wish we had access to canoe or rowboat. Great deck & patio with grill for entertaining. Problems with the wii-fi however owner was trying to fix. *Note if you have babies/toddlers, the stairs in kitchen to 2nd floor have no railing so it can be dangerous (maybe bring baby gate of some sort). Overall fantastic experience and great location. Wish we could stay again but a little pricey for just one family.
Great location. Well-equipped kitchen. Private dock/water access is a plus. Would have liked access to the rowboat. Convenient to town, Water Safari, McCauley Mt., restaurants and stores. The turn of South Shore Rd. is a little hard to find the first time there. What to do with garbage was a challenge! Property is well-maintained and located on a quieter part of the lake. Love the loons!
